At this time of the year the sun sets here in Canada very early. Of course when the sun sets there is no light for bird photography. Even during the day the sun is low in the sky. However, the low angle light can be used as an advantage and not a disadvantage.

To the right and bottom I photographed two Collared Doves with sun setting. Taking advantage of the angle of the sun I was able to get a nice portrait of the birds. It was also - 20 C . My point is it would be very difficult to photograph these birds and achieve the same side lighting in the summer months.
